Breakthrough!

A-At long last! I have nearly completed my goal!

The impossibility of ever making sense of the island's conglomeration of magic initially seemed an insurmountable obstacle; there were far too many cultures and worlds to accommodate. It hardly seemed as if there was even a system at all! Working towards a solution from this angle, of course, eventually proved to be nothing more than an extremely frustrating headache; one would have to eventually account for every single known world's system if one wished to reroute the currents as one desired -- But lo! Upon rethinking my initial analysis of the entire project, a single point jumped out at the brilliant mind of Klarth. The indiscriminatory nature of this magic! It had been noted previously that those with absolutely no previous magical aptitude could simply take a scroll and perform the most elementary of magical feats without so much as breaking a sweat. Though I had somehow managed to miss it before, the obvious conclusion drawn would be that the source of magic upon this island -- perhaps a stream of mana hidden either high above the island or below, or perhaps simply a new source as of yet undocumented in the texts -- did not flow from being to being as I had previously thought! Instead, it seems obvious now that each being can tap into the source individually, and it was only after he had done so that the magic would convert to the system he was most familiar with. Rather than a long, intertwined chain of mana running throughout, each person was free to dip into this stream, a far more efficient system! Going on this principle, it was hardly difficult at all to tap into this stream myself!

Now behold! The fusion of supreme intelligence, craftsmanship, and art -- The Magic Cannon!

Here goes no --

It just suddenly came to me out of the blue. Like a whisper in the back of my mind.

It's all theory, of course. But immensely fascinating to ponder! Magic does, of course, exclude certain species traits; some people's abilities come about just because they're, well. Special.

one of my students is interested in my work im so happy sniff

[identity profile] shoukanjutsu.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, hmm. And do you have any recollection of how you developed your magic? Or can you simply do it?

[identity profile] deathly-origami.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Uhm... I'm very sorry about that. Will you make a second attempt at this project?

[identity profile] shoukanjutsu.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Don't call me that, I'm not that old! Least I don't have white hair.

Anyway, your hobbies are none of my concern. What were you saying earlier about ideas, though?

[identity profile] frumpyface.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
My apologies. It's something of a force of habit.

Well, there are three crucial pieces. The first is one's ability for magic and their capacity for magic, also known as internal magic. The second are spirits that exist in nature, although it's commonly easier to just think of it as untapped, raw magic. The third is any given person's receptiveness to this untapped magic, or simply potential.

In its simplest form, magic is created by channeling incantations from a tome through one's internal reserves of magic. Many people in Elibe have fairly low potential and ability; therefore, they find it difficult to wield or control spells.

Those with greater potential and ability for magic are able to combine the raw magic around them into the spell as well. Meditation tends to make this an easier feat than normal.

I also remembered a bit about magic in my world, but not much. Just that it's incredibly rare, and that I've always been able to use it. What that means, I'm not sure...

[identity profile] no-good-tsuna.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. We don't have much magic in my world. Or rather, most people don't know about it. Anyone who's studying it seems to keep what they learn to themselves.

[identity profile] unnatural-20s.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
I've already built like twenty failed genocide machines! Stop ripping off my gig!

[identity profile] shoukanjutsu.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I believe most worlds operate similarly to your own. Not everybody is capable of wielding magic; only those with both the technique and the ability to tap into the power. But it seems yours is a world where magic resides both within the magician and in outside sources as well. Fascinating!

About these spirits -- Are they intelligent creatures? Or merely raw element floating about, awaiting for someone to harness their power?

[identity profile] shoukanjutsu.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm . . . A shame. There is little potential for growth in a world where magic remains concealed as such.

Would you happen to know any tricks, Tsuna?

[identity profile] shoukanjutsu.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Of course! You can't accomplish anything if you give up after only trying once!

Perhaps after the fifteenth time or so.

[identity profile] shoukanjutsu.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Hm! Incredibly rare . . . Then it's possible that magic in your world exists only in the magicians themselves -- your very body may be a reservoir of mana, Terra!

Err. Not that I have any way to tell right but -- The thought is interesting, anyway.

[identity profile] shoukanjutsu.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
. . . It's not a genocide machine; it's a Magic Cannon! Different! Totally different!

[identity profile] no-good-tsuna.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Most people wouldn't believe it was magic unless they saw it themselves. My world is more of a sciency one.

I can do some stuff when I take my pills, but I don't really like to.

[identity profile] allnaturalmagic.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
You think? I wonder...

[She begins chanting again.]

Fire!

[And a blaze of flames goes shooting off into the distance, harmless but still impressive.]

[identity profile] frumpyface.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Admittedly, it's hard for me to imagine a person without magical reserves. It seems to be a part of me just like blood, for instance. Casting too much magic and depleting one's reserves is a dangerous thing indeed.

That, I'm not sure about. It simply feels like raw element, but it sometimes acts as if there is a modicum of sentience. I apologize, as I'm still a student myself; I've never been able to form a conclusion one way or the other.

[identity profile] unnatural-20s.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
And just what do you use Magic Cannons for, huh?

[identity profile] shoukanjutsu.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm . . . Your world may be severely deficient in mana. That is occasionally the case as well; there are even worlds without mana altogether.

. . . Pills?

[identity profile] shoukanjutsu.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, no, perfectly understandable, ma'am. I'm simply trying to puzzle things out the best I can myself. No memories as of yet, you see.

[identity profile] shoukanjutsu.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
[Klarth is speechless with joy. After some time . . . ]

Ahh -- Any other spells at the moment?

[identity profile] shoukanjutsu.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm . . . To shoot magic, of course.

[identity profile] unnatural-20s.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
At...?

[identity profile] no-good-tsuna.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
That could be. The stuff I think is magic might even be more science stuff.

I don't remember the details, but they let me use my dying will instead of my, er, regular will. But it's strange being like that, so I don't like to take them unless I have to.

[identity profile] deathly-origami.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Your dedication is really admirable, Klarth! Good luck to you, but please try to be careful. You really gave us all a start!
