A-At long last! I have nearly completed my goal!

The impossibility of ever making sense of the island's conglomeration of magic initially seemed an insurmountable obstacle; there were far too many cultures and worlds to accommodate. It hardly seemed as if there was even a system at all! Working towards a solution from this angle, of course, eventually proved to be nothing more than an extremely frustrating headache; one would have to eventually account for every single known world's system if one wished to reroute the currents as one desired -- But lo! Upon rethinking my initial analysis of the entire project, a single point jumped out at the brilliant mind of Klarth. The indiscriminatory nature of this magic! It had been noted previously that those with absolutely no previous magical aptitude could simply take a scroll and perform the most elementary of magical feats without so much as breaking a sweat. Though I had somehow managed to miss it before, the obvious conclusion drawn would be that the source of magic upon this island -- perhaps a stream of mana hidden either high above the island or below, or perhaps simply a new source as of yet undocumented in the texts -- did not flow from being to being as I had previously thought! Instead, it seems obvious now that each being can tap into the source individually, and it was only after he had done so that the magic would convert to the system he was most familiar with. Rather than a long, intertwined chain of mana running throughout, each person was free to dip into this stream, a far more efficient system! Going on this principle, it was hardly difficult at all to tap into this stream myself!

Now behold! The fusion of supreme intelligence, craftsmanship, and art -- The Magic Cannon!

Here goes no --

Are you sure you want to build another cannon? Something safer might be better.

. . . What's your opinion of magic rockets?

How is that safer?!! Why not... a magic windmill? Or a light bulb? Something that's not suppose to be a weapon.

Lightbulbs are magical enough without my help. And I don't see the practical use of a windmill here.

I suppose I could always go with my original idea. Firecrackers.

Well... firecrackers sound a little less destructive.

Are you saying we get our powers from a magic river?

From: [identity profile] shoukanjutsu.livejournal.com
Not quite. It was merely a descriptor, a commonly used one.

The source of magic differs from world to world -- Generally, it is drawn from a certain substance that permeates certain worlds, known as mana. On occasion, the texts note that it really does flow in a 'stream' of sorts. Other times, however, mana may be drawn from within the body, or from artifacts, or from certain powerful creatures. I suspect that, due to the fusion of so many worlds, it would be most logical for the island to possess its own reservoir into which we tap.

. . . Was that intelligible enough?

Uh... I guess. No. I never thought about where everyone's abilities came from before.

It's all theory, of course. But immensely fascinating to ponder! Magic does, of course, exclude certain species traits; some people's abilities come about just because they're, well. Special.

one of my students is interested in my work im so happy sniff

Ah. We don't have much magic in my world. Or rather, most people don't know about it. Anyone who's studying it seems to keep what they learn to themselves.

Hmm . . . A shame. There is little potential for growth in a world where magic remains concealed as such.

Would you happen to know any tricks, Tsuna?

Most people wouldn't believe it was magic unless they saw it themselves. My world is more of a sciency one.

I can do some stuff when I take my pills, but I don't really like to.

Hmm . . . Your world may be severely deficient in mana. That is occasionally the case as well; there are even worlds without mana altogether.

. . . Pills?

From: [identity profile] no-good-tsuna.livejournal.com
That could be. The stuff I think is magic might even be more science stuff.

I don't remember the details, but they let me use my dying will instead of my, er, regular will. But it's strange being like that, so I don't like to take them unless I have to.

Your dying will.

. . .

Tsuna! Don't do it; you have so much to live for! Like Mist! And home and careers class! And, umm. Mist!

Date: 2009-04-09 04:05 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] no-good-tsuna.livejournal.com
What? NO!! You've got it all wrong! It's not like that at all! And as if home and careers class would help convince me to live!

Jeez. It's more of a determination thing. You stop doubting everything in your life and just focus on doing what's really important. What you would regret not doing if you died right then. Then you can do all sorts of amazing things to make things right. You get stronger, faster, and with the right equipment you can do other stuff using your Dying Will as a power source.

Well, good. Rule #3 of Home and Careers: Suicide is bad for your health.

Huh. That sounds . . . interesting. A type of magic catalyzed by adrenaline, it seems -- Perhaps it does have more to do with science than magic.

I knew that all ready!

Some of it seems like magic to me. This one guy could create illusions and summons snakes out of nowhere... though I don't know if that was because of his Dying Will, his aura, or both. My tutor never bothered explaining the details.

. . .

Yeah, I'd say that's magic. What can you do when you access this 'Dying Will'?

Mainly embarrass myself. Unless I'm in hyper mode, I tend to focused too much on one thing to care about little details. Like clothing.
